Home gym equipment, especially those sold on infomercials, are all advertised based on one principle—convenience. But convenience is a double-edged sword, and the number one reason people fail to use their home gym equipment.
When it comes to gaining muscle, the tried and true methods still work the best: multi-joint exercises, lifting heavy weights, using free weights, and sticking with a program. The problem with purchasing home gym or exercise equipment is that people stop using them very quickly, especially after not living up to the advertised “results.” This is where convenience becomes a double-edged sword. The typical line of thinking is, “I’m tired when I get home from work, and I don’t want to have to drive to the gym and spend money on monthly fees.” Instead, people end up spending anywhere from $1000 to $3000 on a home gym.
Say the average gym has a $50 sign up fee and a $30 monthly charge. You can spend $1,120 for a 3 year membership and get access to every piece of equipment, or you can spend the equivalent (or more) on a home gym that lets you do maybe eight different exercises.
What if you wanted to do cardio as well as lift weights? Might as well throw in an extra $400 for a treadmill.
If the cost alone doesn’t deter you from buying home gym equipment, think about all the distractions in your home that will keep you from concentrating on your workout: parents, siblings, significant others, kids, computers, food, a bed, cleaning…all things that you need to not be focused on while you are working out.
