It’s hard to see all those “real results” on TV and not be impressed. However, the secret to obtaining 6 pack abs is not some ab machine or exercise.
With all the misleading infomercials on TV, articles in magazines and on the internet, I feel I need to dispel the myths and set the record straight about getting “sexy 6 pack abs,” and “that firm, toned stomach.”
I encourage you to share this article because abs are the single most desired body part by men and women, yet there is so much false information presented by companies in order to sell their products. Without further ado, here are the top 5 ab myths, debunked:
1. The more I work my abs, the more definition I will see.
You will not begin to see definition until you lose the layer of fat over your stomach. This means losing weight. You will not lose weight by doing ab exercises. Ab exercises like crunches use a minuscule range of motion and will not burn enough calories for you to lose weight. Ever.
2. I can spot reduce with ab-burning exercises.
Spot reducing refers to the process of trying to lose weight in a very specific area, such as doing exorbitant amounts of crunches to lose weight off the abdominal region. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. Abdominal exercises will help strengthen the muscles, but the amount of fat burned is very minimal.
3. But what about all the people in those commercials who lost weight using ab belts or ab machines?
I hate to break it to you, but those people did not get “tight, sexy abs” with the Ab Lounge or Contour Ab Belt. They lost weight by running, sprinting, and participating in other aerobic exercises. Those products may have helped them strengthen their abdominals, but those people certainly did not lose weight doing those machines.
Many of these machines claim that you will lose weight in just “20 minutes a day!” If you are able to do the same ab exercise for 20 minutes, you are not getting near enough of a burn to sufficiently strengthen the abs.
Say you are doing crunches on an exercise ball. If you are contracting your abs throughout the movement and doing the exercise properly, you should feel a very good burn after 30-40 reps. It does not take long to engage the ab muscles. On top of that, you need to be hitting your abs from different angles by engaging in different exercises. Most ab machines are one-dimensional.
4. I can continue to eat the same amount of calories and get a slimmer midsection.
Technically yes, but you are likely only making it harder on yourself. If you are determined to lose weight and see a slimmer stomach, it’s highly advisable that you eat fewer calories and do aerobic exercise.
5. I will never be able to obtain 6 pack abs because of my genetics.
This is a very defeatist attitude and one that is certainly not true. Yes, some people naturally have very high metabolisms and very little body fat. They can get away with almost never working their abs and still have that washboard stomach. The grand majority of people do not have that luxury, but it will be all the more satisfying when you finally see the results you’ve worked so hard for.
In summation, you will not get 6 pack abs from doing crunches or by doing abdominal exercises alone! You must lose that layer of fat first. Train your abs like any other body part. Generally, in order to see a 6 pack, you need to get your body fat under 10%.
Remember: Proper diet and cardio are the keys to a slim and toned midsection.
